Experience Media & Lifelogging
We capture first-person video, gaze, and social/physical activity to understand, reflect on, and reuse everyday experiences and interactions.
At Sumi Lab, Future University Hakodate, we study technologies that capture and understand human experience, conversation, exploration, and learning—and turn them into new opportunities for insight and action.
Our focus is not computers in isolation, but the way people see, talk, wander, discover, and learn in the real world. We use sensing, AI, and interaction technologies to understand these processes and design media that augment human activity.

We study how unplanned encounters with information—through libraries, books, news, and games—can spark curiosity and learning.
We design systems that connect experiential knowledge in everyday conversations with context—place, task, and people—so it can reach others when useful.
We combine body movement, physical and virtual spaces, and multiple viewpoints to create new experiences for appreciation, collaboration, and creativity.

Crossword puzzles generated from newspaper archives and generative AI are used to study how failure, hints, and article reading can trigger later exploration and learning.
Personal associative dictionaries introduce viewpoints a searcher might not have considered, supporting exploratory and serendipitous book discovery.
Inspired by pedometers, this work estimates the amount and type of daily social interaction from faces observed in first-person video.
The Kotodama system links workplace conversations and know-how to their situations and replays them naturally for people who later encounter similar contexts.

My research spans human-computer interaction, experience media, lifelogging, communication support, and knowledge engineering. I am particularly interested in technologies that enrich distinctly human processes such as wandering, noticing, conversation, reflection, and discovery—not merely making tasks more efficient.
